Hattie McDaniel (1895-1952) was the 1st Black Oscar winner, for her role in Gone with the Wind. Hattie accepted her honor in a segregated 'No Blacks' Hotel in Los Angeles. The honor did not afford her any leniency.
Pigeonholed by Hollywood as the sassy Mammy archetype, and disowned by the NAACP for perpetuating negative stereotypes, she was challenged at every turn. Even after death, her final wish — to be buried in Hollywood Cemetery, was denied because of the color of her skin.
